DESCRIPTION: A long-standing Canadian friend of over 25 years who is a concert pianist and teacher as well as a piano restorer has commented, " This second- hand instrument is above average musical value for a student. I would say at least up to Grade 5 level, and even at Grade 8 a Bechstein is almost always superior. I found the touch to be crisp and responsive, the sound clear, dynamic and pliable, and the tone quality itself of a very high order. I personally love both my Bechstein uprights for their extraordinarily musical sound, derived in no small part from the original hammer felt, which I believe is still on the hammers on your piano also. This is almost impossible to replicate - and very expensive to try to! I am giving you my professional and personal opinion."
A professional valuation has been obtained from Courtney Pianos of Oxford who commented "Some refurbishment work has been carried out and the re-polishing looks very sound from the information given by the photos. The action is clean along with the keyboard, and it is fair to say that no essential work is required to the playing mechanism. The piano's strings and wrest pins are, however, the originals - it has clearly never been restrung. This essential work is part of the restoration process and any buyer will almost certainly need to have this done in the near future. Strings tend to have a shelf-life of around 80 years before the tone-quality or tuning stability starts to affect its performance, so our advice would be that this piano both merits and requires this important work to ensure its continued viability. That said, this is clearly a fine instrument, and, in its part-restored condition, a fair value for both parties would be c £3000-£3300."
As can be seen from the above, the work that needs to be undertaken has been accounted for in the valuation.
If interested, a duet piano stool, a metronome and sheet music are available.
